Ernst Basler + Partner and the Federal Office of Energy jointly examined the EnergySwitzerland programme, whose aim is to phase out nuclear energy by 2050. That goal should in part be reached by increasing energy efficiency. But energy efficiency can also lead to a so-called rebound effect, for instance when reduced energy prices result in increased demand.

Energy sufficiency applies to actual energy demand and thus complements energy efficiency measures in a sustainable way. Ernst Basler + Partner analysed the EnergySwitzerland programme for energy sufficiency and proposed new measures. According to Ernst Basler + Partner, implementing these measures will “not be easy” as they could call into question consumer behaviour.
