Construction of the “sue&til” residential and commercial development has officially started on the 17,800-square-metre former Sulzer site in the Winterthur district of Neuhegi. The construction company Implenia, together with the investor and client Allianz Suisse, representatives of the city of Winterthur and other guests celebrated the laying of the foundation stone.

As Implenia writes in a press release, “sue&til” is the largest-ever timber-built residential project in Switzerland. Based on the competition-winning design produced by the team of weberbrunner architekten and Soppelsa Architekten, the project is being built according to SIA Energy Efficiency Path 2040 standards and meets the objectives of the 2000 Watt Society. Wood plays a central role in a achieving a good grey energy balance. While the underground and ground floors as well as the staircase will be built in concrete, the upper floors will be built in wood.

The total amount invested in the project is CHF 162 million. Allianz Suisse purchased 260 rental apartments for CHF 135 million. Implenia is now carrying out the project as total contract on behalf of Allianz Suisse. “This is the biggest construction project we have ever carried out as an investor,” says Severin Moser, CEO of Allianz Suisse. “We are happy that it is finally underway and that the building will set standards for sustainability.”

The first residents are expected to move into their new homes in spring 2018.
