The BB Green was built at Latitude Yachts in Riga, Latvia, writes Leclanché in a press release. It can hold up to 70 passengers plus their bicycles and operates at a speed of 56 kilometres per hour. The first of its kind, the Air Supported Vessel (ASV) is the result of a five-year long EU project and will initially be used for demonstration purposes across Europe.

Eight main partners were involved in realising the BB Green project, including Leclanché. The turnkey battery energy storage system designed by the Swiss company makes BB Green the world’s fastest electric commuter vessel, writes Leclanché.

Antti Väyrynen, Leclanché vice president, emphasises the importance of this project: “Full electrification of passenger ferries will reduce local emissions and provide silent and comfortable transportation on waterways.”

Leclanché is currently involved in another ferry electrification project to outfit the world’s largest electric ferry with a turnkey energy storage system. It will be launched in Denmark in 2017.
