The Nuremberg-based company Leoni has acquired a two-thirds holding in Adaptricity AG. According to a Leoni statement, the Zurich-based start-up will contribute its software-supported consulting services based on expert electrotechnical knowledge to Leoni. This will enable Leoni to deploy time series-based simulations, which can be used to help evaluate possible SmartGrid upgrade alternatives.

With the majority holding, Leoni will also gain access to skills in the fields of software, simulation and cloud-based data analysis. The provider of cable and cable systems has defined these areas as the primary building blocks of new digital business models.

Adaptricity is a spin-off of the Power Systems Laboratory at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. The company develops simulation and optimisation software tools for adapting electric distribution grids for the transition towards renewable energy.  Its products are designed to help distribution grid operators evaluate a large set of possible SmartGrid upgrade alternatives before making costly grid investments.
