The initiative to reduce carbon emissions in Bitung goes back to the Asia-Pacific Economic  Forum (APEC), which in January presented a low-carbon development strategy to develop an industrial greenfield in the Special Economic Zone in Bitung. According to a press release, South Pole Group led the international consortium that developed the strategy and implementation roadmap.

Low-carbon industrial greenfield projects have been implemented elsewhere. The current project will enable the Indonesian government to curb greenhouse gas emissions associated with urban planning. All participants will have the information needed to encourage both public and private developers to take focused climate action, says South Pole Group.
